The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services has announced the appointment of new committee members for its Health IT Standards and Health IT Policy Committees. The committees, which were created by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act in 2009, provide a "direct means" for stakeholders and the public to provide input to HHS on health IT issues, according to HHS' announcement. The Secretary of HHS appoints all of the members of the HIT Standards Committee; HHS appoints some of members of the HIT Policy Committee; others are appointed by congress, the comptroller general of the United States, and the president.

There now are eight new members on the HIT Standards Committee, including representatives from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, consulting groups, provider organizations and the pharmaceutical industry. Announcement
