EMRs at the Detroit Marathon

Last year, researchers from Henry Ford Hospital deployed EMRs for injury management and surveillance of the more than 19,000 runners in the Detroit Marathon. Working with physicians from Detroit Medical Center and an IT specialist with Michigan's Medical Biodefense Network, the team logged encounters with 216 participants and spectators who needed medical attention during the race. Having the mobile EMR allowed healthcare providers throughout the 26.2-mile course to coordinate care in real time, help families locate injured loved ones and, eventually, give researchers the insight to identify injury patterns in such "mass participation" events.
