Tenet accelerates Cerner implementation

Thanks to a new agreement with EHR vendor Cerner, Tenet Healthcare will accelerate the rollout of health IT at 47 of its 49 hospitals in hopes of capturing federal stimulus funding as soon as possible.

"For the past several years, Tenet has been on a path to leverage technology to improve clinical quality and patient safety. By accelerating and expanding our implementation of Cerner Millennium solutions, we will be able to move more quickly from paper charts and manual processes to electronic health records," Tenet Chief Operating Officer Dr. Stephen L. Newman says, according to Healthcare IT News. "This evolution will enhance clinical decision support and the exchange of information with community healthcare providers."

The Cerner Millennium EHR will give clinicians universal access to real-time patient information from anywhere within the hospital, provide computerized physician order entry and include evidence-based rules and alerts to prevent errors, Tenet officials say. The for-profit hospital company also will be able to identify best practices and track outcomes and patient trends. As proposed last week, the CMS rules for meaningful use of EHRs will require providers to report on outcomes and quality measures.
